Ballymena date for ex-Chelsea legend 'Chopper'

CHELSEA legend Ron 'Chopper' Harris has a date in Ballymena this weekend.

The former Stamford Bridge defender is guest speaker at a special function in the town’s Services Club this Saturday evening, April 17.

Harris is a permanent fixture in any list of Chelsea greats, not least because he is the club’s record appearance holder, with a stunning total of 795.

He made his first team debut in February 1962 at the age of just 17 and for the next 18 seasons, he was a fixture in the London club’s team.

He won the League Cup in 1965 and led the Blues out as captain in four major finals between 1967 and 1972. His greatest moment was becoming the first Chelsea captain to lift the FA Cup.

But how Harris will be mostly commonly remembered among football fans of that generation was for his touch-tackling, uncompromising style that earned him the nickname ‘Chopper’.

His Ballymena date is an evening not to be missed, when he will be accompanied by top English comedian Mick Pugh.

Ron will regale guests with tales from his playing career, along with a question and answer session.

The evening, which has been organised by First Ulster Chelsea Supporters’ Club, also includes a charity fund-raiser, memorabilia raffle and auction of items both from Ron’s era and from the Chelsea of today.

“I have spoken to Ron’s agent and she has confirmed he is looking forward to coming over,” said Mervyn Robinson, one of the event organisers.

“I have met him and he is a very down-to-earth man.

“You don’t have to be a Chelsea fan to attend this event - it is of interest to any football fan,” added Mervyn.

Tickets, priced at 10 including light refreshments, are available from the Services Club, Trostan Avenue, or by contacting 07803 899751.
