Ballymena & Provincial League: Clough dent Olympic promotion hopes

Clough Rangers Athletic produced one of their best performances of the Ballymena & Provincial League season at the weekend.

Jimmy Rock’s side have spent much of the campaign in the lower reaches of Junior Division Two of the Michelin Athletic Club-sponsored chanpionship.

But on Saturday they turned on the style to defeat second-placed Larne Olympic 4-2 at their Cloughwater Road base.

In the same division Wakehurst Strollers, whose impressive early-season form has tailed off in recent weeks due to a number of key players being called up to the first team, suffered another league defeat, this time to Moyola Park Olympic.

INTERMEDIATE DIVISION

Chimney Corner 1, Dunloy 3: Dunloy started off on attack and went in front after Declan McGarry scored on the 19th minute.

Dunloy continued to attack and doubled their lead after Conal Dooey scored on the 33rd minute giving them a two goal lead at half-time.

Corner were never out of the game but then conceded a penalty on the 67th minute which Declan McGarry converted setting the Allen Park man an uphill tack of getting back.

To their credit, Corner kept going getting a deserved goal when Jamie Willigan scored on the 80th minute.

JUNIOR DIVISION ONE

Mallusk Athletic 0, Antrim Rovers 1: On a fast flowing 3g surface both sides created plenty of chances.

However, only one goal was scored by Charlie O’Grady on the 63rd minute which was enough to earn all three points for the Antrim side.

JUNIOR DIVISION TWO

Clough Rangers Athletic 4, Larne Olympic 2: This was a welcome win for Clough but a dent in the Larne title aspirations.

Ross Steele scored on the 13th minute putting Clough in front then and own goal concede by Larne on the 17th minute put Clough two goals in front.

Robbie Sutherland made it three nil for Clough on the 57th minute followed by Richard Ross making it four nil on the 64th minute.

Larne his back with Elliott Hayes scoring on the 64th minute but it was late in the game when Daniel McWilliams scored their second on the 84th minute.

Moyola Park Olympic 3, Wakehurst Strollers 1: This was a big win for Moyola but a downer on the promotion hope of the Strollers.

Moyola went in front after Josh Evans scored on the 1st minute and this early goal separated the teams at half-time.

Moyola increased their lead after Darren Mawhinney scored on the 60th minute.

Strollers tried hard to get back into the game getting a goal after John Alexander scored on the 75th minute.

Wakehurst went in search of the equaliser but got caught when Peter Stuart nipped in to make it 3-1 on 87 minutes.
