Corner on wrong end of Crawford Cup upset

Chimney Corner found themselves on the wrong end of a cup upset in Saturday’s Ballymena & Provincial League action.

The Allen Park side made a blistering start to the season but their form has tailed off in recent weeks and they were dealt another setback on Saturday.

Corner were eliminated from the Crawford Cup - the league’s flagship knockout competition - as they suffered a shock 6-2 home defeat by Junior Division One side Sort & Leisure Swifts Reserves.

CHimney Corner 2, SPort & Leisure Swifts Reserves 6: This result was certainly an upset on the day as the Corner were favourites to win going into the game.

Kevin Lynch put the Sports in front on the 5th minute and this goal separated the teams until Jack Kelly equalised for the Corner on the 26th minute. Kevin Lynch restored the Sports advantage on the 44th minute then Jack Kelly equalised for the Corner on the 59th minute.

Kevin Lynch completed his hat-trick on the 67th minute but this time there was no reply from the Corner. Sports went on to score three more goals through Ryan McAuley on the 70th and 89th minutes and Paul McCann sandwiched in between on the 78th minute.

JUNIOR DIVISION ONE

Antrim Rovers 3, FC Whiteabbey 2: The opening goal came on 46 minutes when Darryl Brammeld scored putting the Rovers ahead then on the 52nd minute Conor Mullen scored the equaliser for Whiteabbey.

Whiteabbey then went ahead in the game after Matthew Cousins scored on the 75th minute but the score was back level after Darren Adair scored for the Rovers on the 80th minute. Play then went into stoppage time when on the 93rd minute Jonny Rogers converted a penalty to win the game for Rovers.

JUNIOR DIVISION TWO

Clough Rangers Athletic 2, Mountainview 7: Clough were 6-0 down in this game before scoring twice in the last five minutes through Paul Holmes and Daniel Ross.

Ballynure Old Boys ‘B’ 3, Wakehurst Strollers 2: Ballynure went in front after Robert Watson converted a penalty then the Strollers got back level after John Alexander scored.

Half-time was then approaching when Jonny Kane scored putting Ballynure in front at the break. Wakehurst got back on level terms after Adam Shingleton equalised on the 65th minute then with time running down fast Robert Watson scored his second goal on the 85th minute that won the game for Ballynure.
