Countdown on to United-backed Sport Relief Mile

Setting off from pitch side in the Showgrounds Main Arena, the Ballymena Mile will take place around the Showgrounds Complex, whilst the 3 and 6 mile events will take in the ECOS pathway.

All the money raised by the public will help people living unimaginably tough lives right here on our doorstep, across the rest of the UK and in some of the world’s poorest countries.

Iain Black, Community Relations Officer at Ballymena United said: “The Ballymena mile is set to be an amazing event. With 2 weeks to go before The Sport Relief Mile, the push is on to reach the target of 200 people coming together to support this great cause.

“We are aiming to attract families to come out for a walk to raise a bit of community spirit as well as raise money.”

Participants can choose their own distance, from 1, 3 or 6 miles, and can complete it in any way they fancy. From teeny tots with their mums and dads, to super sprinters up against the clock, there’s something for everyone on the big day. Music and entertainment on the day will be provided by Davy ‘Kingo’ King, as well as a crossbar challenge after the event to win tickets for an up-coming Ballymena United match.

Responding to recent comments surrounding the event being held on a Sunday, Iain Black said: “the Sport Relief Mile is held on the same day in each location.

Ballymena United had no say in the date chosen, and respect the views of those who do not wish to take part on a Sunday. All councillors were invited to help promote the event and only one, Declan O’Loan, replied with support.

“Those who have expressed criticism have chosen to do so publicly rather than contacting myself or the football club directly, which is disappointing.”
