Ferguson happy to be cup underdogs

The Sky Blues host their in-form fierce rivals with a place in the semi-final at stake and Ferguson is eagerly anticipating the clash.

“It’s the biggest game of the season simply because it’s the next one,” said Ferguson.

“After Wednesday night, Portadown on Saturday will be the biggest game of the season.

“It’s a massive game there’s no doubt because it’s a cup game and a derby.

“I believe Coleraine will go into the game as favourites.

“They are on a great run of form, they are winning matches consistently, scoring goals.

“We’re down to the bare bones with Matthew Tipton and David Cushley suspended, Gavin Taggart injured, Willie Faulkner and Gary Thompson sick and Matthew Shevlin with the under-19s.

“He gets back on Tuesday night but it’s hardly ideal preparation having three flights and coach journeys, travelling from the other side of the world.”

Ferguson is likely to stick with Allan Jenkins as a makeshift striker, supported by Mark Magennis, who made a rare start in Saturday’s 1-0 win at Ballinamallard.

“Mark brings that little bit extra in terms of he has good footballing ability, two good feet, and he has a wee nasty streak and winds people up - he has a whole lot in his locker and he didn’t do himself any harm at the weekend,” added Ferguson, whose side are at home to Portadown in the Danske Bank Premiership on Saturday (3pm).

Despute the heavy rain of recent days, United officials have stated that a pitch inspection is not required for tonight’s game, unless the weather conditions deteriorate drastically throughout the day.
