Nelson, who has been named as the club’s Player of the Year, signed a two-year contract extension at the weekend.

“We’re delighted Dwayne has signed again,” said Ferguson.

“It has been ongoing for four, five or six weeks but there were just a couple of wee things to iron out.

“He has really come on. He was a good keeper to start off with but I think he has got even better under the guidance of Wes Lamont.

“His new deal will take in a testimonial for him for being so long at the club and we will help him out as much as we can.

“Good goalkeepers are at a premium and we are lucky to have two in both Dwayne and Stuart Addis.

“We want to improve our squad in certain areas but I feel if we get our squad fit and sharp and with a couple of additions we will get better.

“If we can’t bring anyone in who is going to make a difference, we won’t be doing it and onvioulsy financial implications take their toll but we will see what hand we’re dealt.

“If we can get another one or two players of the same ilk as Stephen McBride, players who have been about the league for a while and who are street-wise, it would certainly help us.”

United conclude their Danske Bank Premiership campaign with a home match against Dungannon Swifts this Saturday (3pm).

“We want to finish with a win but it will be tough game – Dungannon will want to finish on a high as well.

“We wanted to go the rest of the season unbeaten and get over the 50 point mark. We can’t do that now but we will try to get 49. It would be a point less than last season but hopefully a trophy in the bag would make up for that point.

“It’s good to see Allan Jenkins and Johnny Taylor back in action and we will have a look at a couple of the other players this week,” added Ferguson.
