‘Greatest’ Homers get ready to celebrate

Harryville Homers can now justifiably lay claim to the title of the greatest team in Ballymena Saturday Morning League history.

That is the view of league secretary Brian Montgomery after the Harryville side clinched a remarkable ‘clean sweep’ of five domestic trophies along with the Coca-Cola IFA Junior Cup.

The Harryville side are the only other Morning League team to win every competition they entered, when they landed five trophies, under their previous name of Raglan Homers, in 1974.

“It’s a remarkable achievement to win every competition you go in for because it would be easy to take your eye off the ball and maybe slip-up in one of them,” Brian told Times Sport.

“But what probably tips the balance in the current side’s favour is the fact they won the Junior Cup as well - no-one should under-estimate what an achievement that was.

“When you consider that only two SML teams - Castletown and Raceview - have won the Junior Shield and the Junior Cup is a step up from that again.”

Homers will be presented with the Junior Cup, Division One championship, Top Four Trophy, Ace Cup, O’Kane Cup and Rainey Cups at the league’s annual dinner this Friday night.

And with Carniny Rangers, Ahoghill Thistle and All Saints Old Boys all aiming to challenge Homers next season, and former intermediate sides Connor and Raceview making their return to the Morning League top flight, the scene is already set for an intriguing campaign next year.
