Inconsistent Wakehurst suffer another setback

Manager Ian Gregg was left with an all-too-familiar feeling of frustration as Wakehurst suffered their second successive home defeat, losing 2-0 to Lurgan Celtic at Mill Meadow.

“Once again we lacked cutting edge and quality,” mused Gregg after a result which left his side languishing in the lower half of the Belfast Telegraph Championship Two table.

“I still believe we have good players but we still concede goals too easily.

“Morale is high and there is a good spirit among the players but they look to be lacking a wee bit of confidence with the ball.”

The visitors took the lead on 17 minutes in their first attack. Raymond Fitzpatrick, who was a constant threat throughout the 90 minutes, won a corner on the right and from the resultant delivery, central defender John Cochrane’s effort hit the upright and Steven McArdle was on hand to add the finish from the rebound.

The second half was only 5 minutes old when Wakehurst conceded again. A well worked free-kick involving O’Hara, McArdle and Fitzpatrick ended with the latter volleying past Cairns.
