Keeper Fyfe spot-on in St Patrick’s success

ST Patrick’s College won the O’Kane Cup (Year 12) final when they beat Cambridge House in a penalty shootout in last week’s final at Ballymena Showgrounds.

In a game played out in very windy conditions St Pats just edged it with goalkeeper Jonathan Fyfe proving the hero with the vital penalty save that gained his side victory.

Right from the off, Cambridge House utilised the wind and they took the lead in the second minute when the excellent Aaron Henry headed in a corner.

Even with the wind advantage in the favour after the break, St Patrick’s equaliser didn’t come until after the introduction of Anthony McAvoy and Thomas Johnstone for the hard working Ryan Walsh and Janusz Wojtowicz. The ball was floated in from the right side of midfield and McAvoy was there to steer the ball into the far corner of the net.

Cambridge House came closest to sealing the win in extra time but for the athletic Fyfe in St Patrick’s net scrambling across his goal to claw out a deflected shot heading for the bottom corner.

In the shootout, both sides successfully converted their first four kicks.

Fyfe then proved the hero of the hour when he saved Cambridge’s fifth but the celebrations were cut short when referee Noel McMullan adjudged the keeper to have moved off his line before the ball was kicked and the penalty had to be retaken. Undaunted, Fyfe saved again it put his team in pole position.

The tension was dramatically brought to a crescendo as St Patrick’s scored their final kick through their forceful midfielder Kamil Mierschursai to seal a thrilling win and lift the O’Kane trophy.
