Kids learning lessons through coaching

FOUR primary schools in the Ballymena area have been taking part in free coaching during curriculum hours, delivered by IFA Grassroots Development Officer Wesley Gregg and sponsored by McDonalds.

The idea behind the eight-week programme is to further the links made with DENI coaches who are delivering a fundamental movement programme in primary schools across the province at P1 and P2 classes, with the development officer in each area delivering to classes P5-7.

It is noted that these programmes work best when they are supported through the schools with families and communities working together allowing for the children to have fun while leaning towards purposeful well thought out and balanced play, in which the children recognise improvement and continues to play independently.

Recent studies have reported that children who were identified with poor coordination at primary school age perceived themselves to have lower levels of physical activity, endurance and sports competence in later life.

The importance of developing fundamental movements has been closely associated with such increased positive movement experiences, reduced drop out from sport and consequently an affinity to lifelong participation in physical activity.

The Grassroots programme is funded by the department of social development and is delivered in partnership with Ballymena community sport programme who deliver Skills and Games development centres in Ballymena on Monday, Fridays evenings and Saturday mornings.
