Ladies take it to maximum

BALLYMENA Ladies were hoping to build on their fine win on their travels last week and they did not disappoint, with a comprehensive 83-41 victory over Coleraine at the Old Ballymoney Road green last week.

Jean Rainey, Kathleen Hoey, Pat Allen and Jennifer Dowds made a confident start against F Arlow on rink 1 when they opened up a 5 shot lead after 3 ends.

The visitors then stunned the Ballymena ladies on the next end when they collected a count of 6 shots, however this was the one and only time that the Coleraine ladies were in front as the Braid ladies won most of the remaining ends to record a 16-12 victory.

The match on rink 2 saw Jennie McCready, Marie Houston, Iris Millar and Barbara Cameron take on the Coleraine rink skipped by L Evans.

The first 7 ends were close with the Ballymena ladies holding a slender 2 shot advantage but the remainder of the game belonged to the home rink.

Of the 11 ends left the visitors were restricted to only 3 single shots while the Braid ladies racked up a further 22 shots to claim an excellent victory by 27 shots to 6.

It was a bit of a one sided affair on rink 3 where Linda McCullough, Peggy Pinkerton, Erin Smith and Sarah Jane Coleman were drawn against M McColgan. The Ballymena ladies put on a dominant performance winning 14 of the 18 ends to record a fine 23-6 win.

Sile Garvey, Gladys Power, Dorothy McKee and Donna McCloy had a real battle on their hands against E McClements on rink 4.

Counts of 3 and 4 shots on the fourth and fifth ends saw the home rink take an early lead, but by the eleventh end scores were level at 11-11.

The lead changed hands on several occasions over the next six ends and with one end left the rinks could not be separated with the scores tied at 15-15, however it was the Ballymena ladies who claimed 2 shots on the last end to run out winners by 17 shots to 15.

This was a great result for the ladies and they will be hoping to make it three out of three when they travel to Portstewart.

Ballymena Ladies 'B' 36, Portrush 34: The format for this year's PTWBA Junior League has changed with teams made up of two triples instead of two rinks.

Ballymena Ladies 'B' made it a winning start to the season with a narrow victory when they travelled to Portrush last week.

On rink 1 Barbara Burnett, Manual Shields and Gwen McAuley were drawn against M Sherrad and it was the visitors who made the better start opening up a 4 shot lead after only four ends.

The Ballymena ladies hit back winning the next 4 ends to lead by 7 shots to 5, however that was as good as it got for the home rink as the Portrush ladies scored counts of 3,5 and 4 over the next 3 ends to open up a commanding 10 shot lead.

There were still 10 shots in the match with one end remaining and it was the Braid triple who collected a vital score of 3 shots to leave the scoreboard reading 20-13 in favour of the visitors.

Lorraine Harris, Jackie Hogg and Jean Lynn did not make the best of starts against M Bell losing the first five ends to trail by 8 shots on rink 2.

A score of 2 shots on the next end was the catalyst required to get the Ballymena triple going as they dominated the remainder of the games outscoring their opponents by 21 shots to 6 to record an excellent 23-14 victory.

This week Ballymena Ladies ‘B’ have a home match against Ballycastle.
