Little to play for in Ports' final match

PORTGLENONE played their final league match of the season at Dunluce on Saturday and with league winners Ballymoney already crowned and relegation issues being decided elsewhere, there was little at stake.

The Bushmills men started smartly building a 32-6 shot lead after 5 ends however with ten played the visitors had reduced the arrears to 17 shots (44-27).

With 15 ends completed the score across the green was 65-52 but over the next 3 ends the game was turned on its head as the Portglenone men took a 3 shot 73-76 lead with just 3 ends to play. This spurred the home rinks into action and they restored their advantage over the closing ends for a 98-83 win.

On rink 1 there was disappointment for Kieran Adams, Frankie Cassidy, Peter Mc Cann and Eamon Mc Cann who were beaten 28-15 by Brian Smyth.

This was a rare defeat for Eamon who is ranked 5th on the senior league's skip's for the season. Brian led 10-3 after 5 ends and with 16 played had extended his advantage to 9 shots on 20-11. The home rink continued their good form of the afternoon and ran out comfortable winners.

Geoff Padgett, Patsy Boorman, Stephen Young and Chris Jones were 6-5 ahead after 7 ends against Barry Kane on rink 2 and with a 1,2,3,4,4,1,1,1,1 scoring sequence romped into a 6-23 lead with 16 ends played.

At this stage credit must go to the home rink who finished the game strongly with a 3,3,2,3,3 to leave just a 2 shot final margin, 21-23.

There was a very good contest on rink 3 where Tommy Mc Cart, Jim Gaul, Frank Jackson and Roy Hunter played Uel Mc Keeman.

The home rink must have thought it was going to be a stroll in the park for them as they led 10-0 after 5 ends and with 11 played still held their 10 shot advantage on 17-7.

After a tied end on the 12th Roy lifted a 5 on the next end and then after dropping a 2,3 went on to score a dramatic 4,5,6 on the next 3 ends to lead 22-27 with 18 ends completed. Uel lifted a 3,3 for a single shot going into the last end but a shot on the last end left a 28-28 draw.

On rink 4 home skip Paul Moore also took a 10-0 lead with 6 ends played and 4 singles by Keith brought the score to 10-4. Paul added to his lead with a 2,4,1 for the loss of a 2 to lead 17-6 with 14 played.

After a 2,3 for Keith and swapped singles it was a 6 shot game at 18-12. An exchange of 3's on the 19th and 20th ends and a 2 on the last for the visitors left a final score of 21-17.
