No joy for Steven at British Championships

THERE was disappointment for young Ballymena bowler Steven Shields when he lost in the semi finals of the British Isles Under 25 Championships which were held in Worthing last week.

Shields who won the Irish Under 25s Singles title last year made a good start in the championships when he defeated Rhys Fielding from Wales by 21 shots to 14 in the preliminary round.

This victory ensured a semi final draw against Jamie Chestney from England who had earlier defeated Matt Le Ber from Guernsey by 21 shots to 3.

Steven actually led for most of the match but Chestney scored a count of 3 shots on the 18th end to get his nose in front for the first time by 17 shots to 15.

After 21 ends the Ballymena man had reduced the deficit to a single shot, but he conceded 2 singles over the next two ends as Chestney claimed victory by 21 shots to 18.

For the record Chestney went on to claim the title when he defeated Martin Rice from Scotland by 21 shots to 15.
