No new year cheer as Amateurs lose at Donaghadee

The start of the new year failed to bring any change in the fortunes of Carniny Amateurs.

David Hanna’s side resumed their Amateur League Division 2c campaign with a 2-0 defeat at Donaghadee.

In a game of the proverbial ‘two halves’ Carniny were certainly the better side in the first period although the County Down side had a better second half which saw them gain all three points.

Carniny were well on top in the first half and both Hanna brothers, Ricky and David, had chances for Carniny with two headed efforts.

The second half saw Donaghadee come more into the game and on 70 minutes the deadlock was broken when the home side took the lead.

Carniny threw all into attack but in the dying minutes where hit a sucker punch with a second goal from the home side.

Carniny Amateurs under-19s went down 3-1 to Knockbreda in their NIFL Youth League game.

In freezing cold conditions, Carniny gave as good as they got in a first period of few chances although with 35 minutes gone the home side took the lead when Carniny failed to make a positive challenge allowing ‘Breda to get in a shot which found the target.

The second half saw little go in the way of favourable decisions from the officials and a rather tame free kick awarded to the home side after the hour mark saw the scoreline doubled.

On 75 minutes Carniny pulled a goal back when Johnston crossed for McCann to head home.

Carniny could have equalised minutes later on two occasions when McCann twice went close but it was Knockbreda who were to increase their lead with a third goal in the dying minutes to wrap up the points.
