Northend under-10s land trophy double

PRIDE of place this week goes to Northend's under-10 team, who, in their first season in competitive football have won the BEAYIL Shield and Knock-Out cup Finals, beating Barn United in both midweek matches. This is in addition to finishing second place in the League.

Barn United 0 Northend United 1 (BEAYIL Cup final): With the Shield in the bag on Monday Night, Northend returned to the Mallusk pitches to face Barn United once again.

In the second half, Barn continued to apply the pressure, and when their big striker rifled a shot towards the top corner, it seemed certain they'd take the lead, but Montgomery in the Northend goal flung himself high and wide to make a miraculous save and keep his team in it.

With 10 minutes left, the deadlock was finally broken, when Cory Little received the ball on the halfway line, he ghosted past several challenges, found himself 12 yards out from a tight angle and rifled a shot into the corner of the net.

With nothing to lose, Barn threw everything at Northend for the remainder of the game, but the boys stuck to the task and held firm, with the exception of once, when the big Barn striker raced through, but Aaron Montgomery raced off his line to dive at his feet, injuring himself in the process and saving his team again, but Northend held on for the win.

The coaching staff has thanked the players and their parents for all their help this year.

Barn United 1 Northend United 3 (BEAYIL Shield Final): The first chance came when Matthew Erwin found space in the box but his shot was well saved by the Barn 'keeper, but from the resulting corner, Cory Little received the ball and drilled a low shot into the net to make the score 1-0 to Northend.

Not content with a single goal lead, the Northend boys continued to push forward land Matthew Downey raced through and slotted into the net, only for it to be harshly ruled out for offside.

Downey was soon rewarded though, when he arrived at the back post to convert an Alex O'Boyle corner with an unstoppable strike into the roof of the net.

The boys had a real head of steam built up by now, and it was only a matter of time before the third goal came, and Matthew Erwin duly obliged when he collected a through ball from Shea O'Brien, cut inside the defender and made no mistake, finding the bottom corner of the net to make the score 3-0 to Northend.

Their lead was soon doubled when a great cross from Sam Bennett was headed superbly in by Ben Sempey.

A mix up in Northend’s defence let in Barn to score, to make the score 2-1. From the kick off Northend replied when Sempey passed to Zack Herbison who beat the defence to score.

The next goal came when David Kilgore played the ball out wide to Bennett who crossed for Herbison to head home his second. Barn scored again due to another mix up in the defence but Northend replied though Andrew Milligan from 25 yards to leave the score 5-2 at half time to Northend.

Northend started the second as they finished the first, Philip Maybin playing in Kilgore who gave the keeper no chance. The same two players combined this time Kilgore heading in Maybin’s cross.

Barn scored again when the midfielder gave James Morgan in goals no chance with a great shot from 20 yards.

Great work from Sempey on the wing and his cross was met by Conor McHugh at the back post for Northend’s eighth.

Kilgore then got away from his marker but his shot was saved by the keeper only for Herbison to beat the keeper to the rebound and slide the ball into the net for his hat-rick. Kilgore scored his hat-rick when he beat a defender and steadied himself before firing past the keeper.

Barn got another goal when the forward outpaced the defence before slotting it past Morgan. Northend did reply again to score the last goal, Maybin passed to Kilgore and his cross was met by Herbison sending the keeper the wrong way.

Comber Rec 0, Northend 6: Northend, knowing a win would see them finish in third place, took the lead when Jaime Brown sent a defence splitting pass to Matthew Mulholland, he left his marker and cleverly chipped the ball over the keeper from a tight angle.

This goal gave Northend some breathing space and when they won a corner, Mulholland crossed the ball and Niall Swann was on hand to score his third goal in three games from corners.

Comber missed a penalty before Jordan Donnelly raced clear of the Comber defence and beat the keeper with a low drive to make the score 3-0 and when Jamie Speirs broke from midfield, his cross was converted at the back post by Dylan Hamill.

Speirs went on a jinking run from midfield, beating two defenders along the way, before unleashing a low shot which the keeper could only parry and Speirs made no mistake with his second time shot.
