Personal contribution little consolation to Teggart after defeat

Alan Teggart could have been forgiven for leaving the Showgrounds a fairly contented man on Saturday.

The left-sided player scored twice and set up United’s other goal in the 3-4 home defeat by Glentoran - but he admits that he still exited Warden Street feeling glum.

“I was pleased with my own contribution but unfortunately it didn’t mean a lot in terms of the overall result,” explained the 26-year-old.

“It would have meant so much more if we had managed to get something out of the game, particularly given the position we’re in.”

Teggart was particularly pleased to get on the scoresheet after a midweek mishap in the County Antrim Shield semi-final defeat by Crusaders.

As the winger raced through clear on goal at Seaview, he opted to pass to team-mate Michael McLellan rather than go for goal himself and the chance was spurned.

“As I was going through I heard Michael calling and I looked up and saw him and tried to find him with a pass - in hindsight I should have had a shot at goal myself.

“I was pleased to hit the net when I was clean through in a similar position against Glentoran.

“I’ve been in some good positions this season and should have more goals than I do.

“I’ve always played throughout my career as an out-and-out winger but the 4-3-3 formation we play gives me more licence to get into advanced positions, so if I was being critical, I would say I should score more goals than I do.

“But I’ve been pleased with the number of assists I’ve had this season - it’s nice to be able to contribute to goals in some way, whether it’s scoring them or setting them up.”

Teggart, who was signed by Roy Walker, has become a regular player under Glenn Ferguson’s leadership - in fact, no outfield player has made more appearance since Ferguson took charge.

Teggart’s ability to score and create goals is going to be crucial as United attempt to pull themselves out of a relegation battle.

“A lot of people are putting us into that category but we believe we have enough to get out of that situation.

“The mood in the camp is good - of course we’re downhearted after defeats but we’re upbeat by the time the next game comes around.

“Glenn was telling us again on Saturday that there’s no point in feeling sorry for ourselves because it will only get worse like that.

“We need to knuckle down and do our talking on the pitch because in this league, if you can put together a run of two or three wins in a row, it can make a huge difference to your position in the table,” adds Teggart.
