Reds record Bann-tastic victory

A 'derby' win over Coleraine Youth Academy by the 13's on their own turf was the highlight of a day of successful fixtures 'on the road' for Carniny Youth FC teams which also saw the 14s win in the Maiden City against Foyle Harps whilst the 10s and 11s saw off Aquinas and Ardoyne in Belfast.

The 12's lost by the odd goal in three against Ballymore on the north coast as the 16s went down to Ballywalter at Ballymena Showgrounds.

Carniny 7, Aquinas 4: Carniny were up and running after five minutes with Campbell slotting home after a fine move.

Aquinas pressed for an equalizer, only for Stewart to score two goals in the space of five minutes to give Carniny a 3-0 lead.

Both sides scored two goals apiece – Archer and Jo Logan for Carniny - in the remainder of the half to leave the score 5-2 at the interval.

Carniny nerves were jangling after Aquinas scored two early second half goals to bring it back to 5-4 but Carniny secured the win with goals from Farquhar and a seocnd from Logan.

Carniny 4, Ardoyne 0: After a scoreless first half, the breakthrough came when a long clearance out of defence from Reid was picked up by Young who crossed for Stewart to score.

Ardoyne then conceded another goal shortly afterwards with a ball out by Reid releasing Stewart who held off the last defender and blasted the ball high into the net.

The third came from good work down the right wing by McHenry and Young who then crossed for Stewart at the back post and his shot was bundled over the line by O'Brien.

The final and best goal came as Ardoyne pressed, Reid split the defence for McDonnell to run through and round the keeper and slot home from an acute angle.

Carniny 1, Ballymoor 2: Carniny began well and took the lead after eight minutes when O'Mullan was put through by a good ball from the centre of the Carniny midfield.

Despite his first attempt on goal being thwarted by a good tackle from the Ballymoor fullback, the ball broke kindly and after a goalmouth scramble he tucked the ball away to give Carniny the lead.

Both teams battled hard to take control of the match but it was Ballymoor who struck next when they played a high shot beyond the reach of O'Neill to level the score.

The second half began well with chances at both ends but it was Ballymoor who took the lead eight minutes in after a free kick wasn't properly cleared.

Carniny almost grabbed an equaliser in the final seconds but Doherty's effort was cleared off the line.

Carniny: O'Neill, Adams, Evans, McComb, McGall, O'Mullan, Keenan, Stewart, Swann, Neilly, Doherty, Smith, Anderson, McNeill.

Carniny 4, Coleraine FC Youth Academy 2: Carniny, in their new kit, took the lead in the fifth minute following good play between Shevlin and Millar with the latter firing home.

Carniny were in full flight and ten minutes later doubled their lead when Fyffe despatched home a free kick in off the post.

The second half saw Carniny continue to dominate and ten minutes in saw the goal of the game running down the length of the pitch with Marquess in goal punting the ball to Mairs who ran past two markers to find Millar who squared the ball to Shevlin to fire home.

Coleraine pulled a goal back mid way through the half when Carniny failed to clear their lines, then five minutes later Coleraine set up a tense finale with a lobbed effort.

Mairs was a constant thorn in the side for Coleraine and he sealed the victory bursting down the left flank in the final five minutes before shooting into the top corner.

Carniny 6, Foyle Harps 4: Carniny took the lead in a cracking game through Cummings when he took on the Harps defence with pace to strike home.

Shortly afterwards Cummings struck again giving the Reds a comfortable lead.

Calderwood took advantage of a Foyle defender's mis-kick in the difficult conditions as he ran on to calmly slot away for 3-0 before Foyle one back just before half-time.

When Cummings scored Carniny's fourth with 20 minutes to go the game appeared to be over but, remarkably, Harps pulled three goals back in quick succession to level at 4-4.

Resilience and hard work were Carniny's best attributes in this game as they knuckled down and goals from Pogue and Lemon finally finished the game off.

Carniny: Gillespie, McMath, McClean, Crawford, Graham, Pogue, Gamble, Calderwood, Lemon, Scroggie, Cummings, Kirk.

UNDER-16

Carniny 2, Ballywalter Youth 5: Having started well, Carniny opened the scoring 15 minutes in when Carson crossed for Millar to fire home.

Ballywalter then equalised when a defensive header out rebounded off their forward to end up in the back of the Carniny net and the North Down lads doubled their tally straight from the restart when a lapse of concentration allowed them to race through the Carniny defence.

Shortly after the reds got back on equal terms when Armstrong rifled home a strong shot from the right side of goal to make it two all at the break.

In the second half Ballywalter were awarded a very soft penalty to restore their lead and from there scored twice more, despite some heroic goalkeeping from Dunlop.

Carniny: Dunlop, White, Black, Todd, C Greene, McClenaghan, Hood, Carson, McKelvey, Armstrong, Apsley, Williamson, McClean, Millar, Curry.
