Seniors march on

LAST Saturday was the third round of the Irish Bowling Association Senior Cup.

Ballymena Seniors were drawn away against NIPGL Senior Division 1 newcomers Salisbury and after a solid start the Ballymena men were never in any danger of losing this match and they have been rewarded for a 108-52 win with a home tie against Blackrock in the next round.

On rink 1 Steven Shields, Graham Wilson, Andrew Morrison and Nigel Robinson made steady progress against T Crawford. At the half way stage of the game they led by 6 shots and by the end of the game they had nearly doubled their advantage and went on to win by 25 shots to 14.

The scores were level at 4-4 after 5 ends on rink 2 where David Duncan, James Gaston, Mark Torrington and Sammy Allen took on G Robinson. The Ballymena men gradually took control of the game and they finished strongly to record a 27-11 victory.

On rink 3 Steven Falls, JR Nicholl, Andrew Kyle and Steven Coleman were drawn against J Warnock. The visitors dominated the first 14 ends and with the help of four counts of 3 shots they raced in to a 22-4 lead.

The Salisbury rink however hit back and won the majority of the remaining ends to give the score an air of respectability with the visitors eventually winning by 23 shots to 15.

David Torrington, Andrew Bonnar, Andrew Duncan and Jim Baker were in great form against G Eaton Jnr on rink 4.

They led by 7 shots after 9 ends and counts of 6 and 5 over the next few ends took the game away from the home rink. The Ballymena men continued to keep on the pressure and went on to win by a handsome margin of 33 shots to 12.

Tonight (Tuesday), the Seniors travel to Ulster Transport in the NIPGL Senior League 1 and they are also at Ulster Transport on Thursday night in the NIPGL Senior Cup. On Saturday the Seniors are on their travels again when they visit Falls in the League.
