Seventh spot is new target for United, says Jeffrey

The Sky Blues boss had dismissed all talk of seventh spot until relegation had been mathematically avoided.

But now, Jeffrey wants his players to try to tie up seventh, stating: “Where do we go from here? You can’t achieve something and then suddenly just take your foot off the gas.

“That won’t be allowed. Now comes the challenge - can we be top of our league? Can we get that seventh place?

“It didn’t surprise me that Dungannon got a result at Portadown but we’ve got to try to look and get that seventh place and that’s the challenge for the players,” the United boss added.

Jeffrey will run a late fitness check on winger David Cushley ahead of tonight’s (Tuesday) Danske Bank Premiership trip to bottom side Warrenpoint Town (8pm).

“David doesn’t come us unless he is badly injured. His attitude and his application has been first class.

“His back is very sore and we will have to assess the situation over the weekend and see what he’s like for Tuesday.”

Jeffrey also hopes that United’s supporters will make the long midweek trip in large numbers to cheer on their team in the quest for three points.

“I can’t speak highly enough of our supporters.

“I know there’s going to be days when we maybe won’t do so well but I’ve had Ballymena supporters standing behind me at matches and all I’ve heard is encouragement, encouragement, encouragement.

“There was another great crowd of Ballymena supporters at Carrick and the players appreciate it.

“They pushed us on and kept encouraging us and hopefully they see that the players are repaying them with the performances and victories,” added Jeffrey.
