Sew-perb finale to Broughshane tournament

STEPHEN Sewell produced a last-gasp double-whammy to seal a dramatic Broughshane Playing Fields Association singles tournament triumph on Saturday night.

The Ardenlee bowler looked to be down and out as he trailed Trevor Turkington (Kildress) by four shots with just two ends to play in the final.

But, in front of a bumper crowd in the Knockan Road clubrooms, Sewell produced a count of '2' on the penultimate end and followed that up with a '3' on the last end to nick an 11-10 win and take the beautiful Waterford Crystal trophy back to east Belfast.

It was a fitting end to a hugely successful tournament, which attracted 270 entries.

The best of the local performers were Malachy Martin (Duneane) who reached the quarter-final before being knocked out by eventual winner Sewell, while Doran Turtle, from the host club, was eliminated at the same stage.

The final was umpired by David Morrison (First Ahoghill) and a cheque for 1,050 was presented to Macmillan Cancer Support.

Results from last week's qualifying rounds and finals nights were:
