Southside Youths FC win 3-2 in opening day fixture

THE FIRST game of the new season could not have been more formidable as Southside had to travel to The Foundry in Ballyclare to take on last season's league winners Castleview.

With a few new faces in the squad Southside began well and looked comfortable as they took the game to the home team. Leon Bonnes went close after just 5 minutes when he neatly dribbled past 3 defenders only to see his low shot go just wide of the post. Another new boy Cory McDowell opened the scoring when he found himself clear of the Castleview defence. He showed composure as the keeper came out and shot low into the corner. Southside continued to look for a second goal and went close with efforts from Kyle Jackson and again Leon Bonnes. The second goal eventually did come on 30 minutes when the ball broke to Dylan Graham about 25yrds from goal. Dylan fired an unstoppable shot high into the top corner of the net to send his team into the half time interval 2-0 up.

The second half saw the home team make a few changes and the game began to swing in their favour. The defensive line of Jonny Logan, Matthew Henry, Jake Frew and Nico Dunlop were tested time and again as the home team pressed for a goal. A Castleview midfielder broke clear from his half to make it 2-1 and on 60 mins the game was level at 2-2 when the same player scored an almost identical goal. With only 5 mins left the scene was set for a match winning hero and up stepped Corey McDowell. Great persistence from Leon Bonnes helped the ball find Corey McDowell inside the box and under pressure from 2 defenders he slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net. The team celebrated in style and hung on for the final whistle to earn a well deserved 3pts.
