Sporting fraternity stunned by death of Shay Hamill

THE sporting and wider community in Ballymena has been stunned by the passing of Shay Hamill.

Shay, who died suddenly on Wednesday, was best-known in football circles where he was much loved and respected, not only locally but across the Province through his involvement in the Irish league.

Shay had spells in charge of Larne, the town in which he had worked for a number of years as a PE teacher, and also took charge of Chimney Corner in three separate spells.

He also had a long association with his hometown club Ballymena United, holding positions including reserve team manager, assistant manager and caretaker manager at different times.

Most recently he had been coaching local junior side All Saints Old Boys, who he helped win their first Ballymena Saturday Morning League title in their history last season.

Shay was also a devoted supporter of Glasgow Celtic and had been at Parkhead last weekend to watch the Hoops’ victory over Hearts.
