Thrilling comeback earns Wakehurst win

WAKEHURST maintained their unbeaten start to their IFA Championship campaign with a highly entertaining 4-3 win over Lurgan Celtic on Saturday.

The game was just four minutes old when Lurgan Celtic opened the scoring through Sam Marshall from what looked liked an offside position.

On 10 minutes Wakehurst were level when a superb pass from Ryan Gregg split the Lurgan Celtic defence and found Jason Paul on the edge of the penalty area and with the goalkeeper off his line, Paul coolly lifted the ball over him and into the empty net.

It was end to end in the first 15 minutes and Lurgan Celtic went ahead again through Gavin Gowdy.

On the stroke of half time and against the run of play, Lurgan Celtic were awarded a free kick just outside the area and Niall Lavery scored with a good effort into the top corner to make it 3-1 to Lurgan Celtic at half time.

From the start of the second half, Wakehurst made their intentions clear and got the goal they deserved on 53 minutes when Rodney Paul picked the ball up and he beat his marker and deftly slotted the ball into the bottom corner to make it 3-2 and game well and truly on.

On 60 minutes, substitute Ross Steele got the equaliser for Wakehurst when he won the ball in the penalty area and against the odds and with sheer determination scored his first goal for Wakehurst to make it all square.
