Title so close for Juniors

BALLYMENA Juniors travelled to Mossley last Saturday knowing that victory would move them a step closer to retaining the NIPGL Junior League Division1 title and the Ballymena men claimed 6 points from a 91-56 win to cement their position at the top of the league.

On rink 1 Alistair Coleman, Stephen Coleman, Ivan Lynn and John Coulter continued their good run of form when they defeated the Mossley rink skipped by J Kelly. Both rinks won 6 of the first 12 ends and while the Mossley rink scored 6 singles, the Ballymena men scored 12 shots to lead by 6 shots.

The remainder of the game was close however the visitors continued to mix it well to go on and record a 24-17 victory.

Alan McAuley, Peter Millar, Denis McClurkin and Jimmy Larkin were level at 4-4 with M Wilkinson on rink 2 after 5 ends, but with scores of 3,3 and 4 over the next 8 ends the home rink opened up an 11 shot lead. A count of 6 shots on the 17th end got the Braid rink back in to the game, and even though they scored 5 shots on the last 2 ends it was not enough to claim victory as the Mossley rink held on to claim a 21-20 victory.

Leslie Barr, Joe McKeown, Michael Wilson and Roy Torrington made a great start on rink 3 against S Salters when they won the first 6 ends to open up a 10 shot lead.

Over the next 10 ends the Mossley men got back in to the game to only trail by 4 shots, however the Ballymena men found their form again and with scores of 4,3,1,1 and 4 they went on to claim victory by 28 shots to 11.

The final game of the day was on rink 4 where Allen Stewart, John McFall, Danny McCullough and Nigel McAleese were drawn against J Hylands.

This was a very low scoring game with only 26 shots scored over the regulation 21 ends, but it was Ballymena's day as they restricted the home rink to only 7 singles while the visitors scored 19 shots to win by a comfortable margin of 12 shots

The Juniors are back in league action next Saturday when they entertain Dunbarton.
