United boss disappointed not to cap comeback with win

GLENN Ferguson took a deep breath as he reflected on one of the most bizarre games of his fledgling managerial career on Saturday.

The Ballymena United boss saw the best and worst of his team in the remarkable 3-3 draw with Donegal Celtic.

“I don’t know whether it was a good game or a bad one for the crowd,” mused Glenn.

“I was disappointed with the attitude in conceding three goals but, that aside, we’ve got to give a lot of credit for the response after half-time.

“We were actually very, very disappointed in the end that we didn’t win the game.

“We tried to get down the sides and get balls into the box and maybe if we had an out-and-out number nine to attack some of the balls in the box we might have won the game but we had to make do with a point.

“The penalty, whether it was or it wasn’t, gave us a big lift going in at half-time.”

Ferguson was less enamoured with his side’s defending which allowed Dc to race into that incredible three-goal lead.

“Davy Munster probably should have dealt with the first goal.

“He’s adamant he was fouled but irrespective of that, he should have cleared his lines better.

“The second one was scrappy and Ryan Deans got some space in the box and the third one, Sean Cleary has held off Allan Jenkins, laid the ball off and spun into the box and Allan has held his hands up to it.

“We’ve had to cope without three of our main attacking players in Davidson, Baker and Costello since the start of the season which has been difficult but we’ve scored three goals without them.

“Unfortunately our defensive record, which has been so good, has come apart.”

Ferguson also admitted his side was frustrated by the stop-start nature of a game littered with stoppages.

“It tells a tale when they’re one up with 10 minutes gone and the goalkeeper’s wasting tiem – I thought the referee could have handled that a bit better and a bit earlier.

“But as I always say, if you can’t win the game, don’t lose it and we were able to come back and get a point,” added Glenn.
