Wakehurst boss aims to battle through ‘tough times’

Paul Muir admits he already has one eye on the January transfer window as he attempts to revive Wakehurst’s season.

The Wakehurst boss surveyed an eighth NIFL Championship Two defeat from 11 matches on Saturday as his side went down 1-0 to Banbridge Town at Crystal Park.

Tellingly, five of those eight victories have come by a single goal margin, suggesting that Wakehurst are by no means being outclassed.

Apart from heavy defeats by promotion Limavady United and Moyola Park, Wakehurst have been largely competitive but have come up just short in a number of occasions.

One of the biggest concerns for Muir is that Saturday’s defeat - along with a loss at Newington the previous week - saw Wakehurst fail to register on the scoresheet.

Earlier in the season, Wakehurst were scoring goals but conceding at the other end as well and now, after tightening up at the back, the Ballymena men have struggled at the other end.

Wakehurst looked as though the effects of their journey were affecting them, with much of the first half played in the visitors’ half.

However, they reached half-time with the scoresheet still blank, giving Wakehurst hope of taking something from the game in the second half.

But the home side grabbed the lead early in the second half when a long ball down the left was cut back for their striker to guide the ball into the far corner.

“In an attempt to retrieve the situation, we changed things up and huffed and puffed without really making any threat on the home goal

“I didn’t think Banbridge were any great shakes however they had a little more experience on the pitch and used and kept the ball well.

“It’s tough times but we’ll stick to the task and hopefully can bring some additional fire power and experience come January,” added Muir.
