Wakehurst boss eyes more new signings

Muir run his eye over former Portstewart striker Nigel Turner in a friendly match at Bangor on Friday night.

Wakehurst had no competitive fixture scheduled as their Castledawson ‘home’ means they aren’t eligible to compete in the Steel & Sons Cup so Muir was keen to keep his side ticking over ahead of their return to Championship Two action this weekend.

Former Ballymena player Garth Scates’ Bangor provided the opposition, with the Seasiders running out 3-1 winners.

“We had eight regulars unavailable so it was a good opportunity for me to blood Matthew Logan and Peter Adams, a couple of the reserve team who have been performing well.

“It was also a chance to give some game time to players returning from injury or holidays such as Niall Swan, Jordan Walker and Conor Ross.

“I also had a look at Nigel Turner, who’s a big, strong, hard-working centre forward. He was a constant thorn in side of an experienced Irish League centre half pairing of Colin Nixon and Dean Youle and he won us a penalty, which Jordan Foster scored, to equalise at the time.

“Bangor scored twice in the second half to win but it was a good work out for lads and certainly has given me something to think about as we get back to bread and butter of an important league fixture.

“We travel to Tobermore United this Saturday and hopefully we can get that elusive first win under our belts.

“With the transfer window about to close, there are two or three new signings I am still working on including a goalkeeper, midfielder and two forwards.

“We have recruited well thus far,” added Muir.

Saturday’s game will be the first of back-to-back matches against Tobermore, with the sides having been paired together in the Craig Memorial North West Cup the folowing Saturday.
