Wakehurst boys left scratching their heads after cup exit

In a weekend where the weather decimated most of the Northend fixtures, the U17s travelled to Coleraine on Friday night for a League Cup match and although dominating the match for most of the time, still came away with a 1-0 defeat.

In a busy week for the Club, Northend’s Chairman, Johnny Sayers and Football Development Officer, John Devlin, attended the Ballymena Sports Awards on Thursday night, where Northend United had been shortlisted for the Participation Award, in recognition of their large membership increase during the previous year.

Coleraine 1, Wakehurst 0: How the Ballymena Boys didn’t progress in this Cup match against Coleraine, we will never know, with no fewer than ten clear attempts on goal.

As early as the tenth minute, a great throughball from Jamie Speirs left Stephen Hare with a one on one with the Coleraine keeper but his shot cannoned off the inside of the Coleraine post and ran along the goal line before clearing to safety.

On another Wakehurst attempt on goal on 15 minutes, the Coleraine centre-back‘s clearance upfield, caught the Wakehurst defence napping and the Coleraine striker’s shot hit the back of the net from all of 30 yards.

Northend again went close after the break when another cross into the box broke to Stephen Hare whose shot struck the post.

Coleraine’s goalkeeper produced a string of fine saves to keep the eager Wakehurst attack at bay but even he could do nothing as Stephen Hare controlled the ball on the edge of the Coleraine box and shot through a packed penalty box only to see the ball strike the upright and clear to safety, as the keeper watched on.

FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

Northend United’s Football Development Centre continued on Friday night at its winter indoor location of the Ballymena North Centre.

With almost 40 boys in attendance the future certainly looks bright for the progressive Club with plans already afoot for a new U8 (2007/2008) team for the 2014/15 season.

The FDC is open to all boys and girls aged 4-10 inclusive who are unconnected with any other Club and takes place each Friday night from 6-7.30pm.
