Wakehurst comeback just too late

A SPIRITED late comeback wasn't enough to prevent a 4-3 defeat for Wakehurst at the hands of PSNI in Saturday's IFA Championship Two match.

With just a quarter of an hour remaining, Ian Gregg's side trailed the police by four goals before a manic last 15 minutes saw them almost pull an unlikely result out of the bag.

The first goal of the game came on the seventh minute as a break from PSNI’s Peter Marks allowed him to square the ball across the six-yard box. It was met by Kris Hunter to give the away side an early lead.

Nineteen minutes in, Marks was involved again. This time he got the goal as an in-swinging corner was flicked on and he made no mistake in extending the lead.

Scott McCrory piled on the misery for Wakehurst as a counter attack, in the 38th minute, saw him through on goal and giving PSNI a three goal advantage at the half.

The situation got worse after the break as Stuart Nelson’s header was blocked but only for the rebound to fall to Marks who grabbed his second of the game.

It looked like it was going to be a long afternoon for Wakehurst but Steven McIlroy gave the home side something to cheer about when his 20 yard strike found the net.

Three minutes later Wakehurst received a penalty they didn’t expect. Mark Crawford didn’t hesitate to get Wakehurst’s second and some momentum for a late charge.

A third did come for Wakehurst but too late to matter. In the 92nd minute Darren Parker’s excellent reverse pass to Steven Mellon allowed him to pass the ball through the keeper's legs and round off a spirited fight back.
