Wakehurst end ‘satisfactory’ season

WAKEHURST manager Ian Gregg declared himself satisfied with his team’s efforts over the season after they clinched a top half of the table finishing position in Belfast Telegraph Championship Two.

A 1-0 win over promotion-chasing Lurgan Celtic on Saturday ensured that Gregg’s side finished eighth in the 16-team division - an outstanding achievement given their lack of resources and the fact they have to play all of their games outside Ballymena.

“When you look at it from that perspective, of what we have in relation to some of the other clubs in the division, we would have to be satisfied,” Gregg told Times Sport.

“The other side of the coin is that we matched and beat most of the top teams at different stages of the season - our problem was that we lacked consistency.

“We’ll certainly take some satisfaction from what we achieved yet we still feel we could have done better.

“Given that Lurgan Celtic had much more to play for than we did on Saturday, our boys were really up for the game and it was nice to end the campaign with a win,” added Gregg.

The only goal of the game came in the 13th minute when a tempting cross from the right by Conor Gregg was deflected off Conor McAnallen and past Fox in the Celtic goal to make it 1-0 for Wakehurst.

Celtic’s only chance of the first half came with an overhead kick from Mackin but Marc Maybin in the Wakehurst goal gathered easily.

The early part of the second half didn’t produce any better chances for the home side and Wakehurst always looked the more threatening with Conor Gregg and Jason Paul giving Celtic a few headaches. Towards the end of the game Celtic had a couple of half chances but the Wakehurst defence stood firm and Wakehurst deservedly took all three points.
