Wakehurst hit top spot in league

WHAT a transformation in the fortunes of Wakehurst!

Having only won a handful of games in Championship Two last season and having only narrowly avoided finishing bottom, Ian Gregg's side have made a blinding start to the new campaign, recording a second successive win with a 1-0 victory over Portstewart at Castledawson on Friday night.

Two victories, with no goals conceded in either, take Wakehurst to the rarefied heights of the summit of the Championship Two table.

The first 20 minutes were evenly matched with few goalscoring chances but that changed on 25 minutes when a combination of Stephen Gage and goalkeeper Gavin Marks cleared what looked like a certain goal from Bryan Tosh.

On 35 minutes, Wakehurst should have scored when good work by Jason Paul and Mark Crawford gave Crawford an opportunity but his shot just went over the bar.

At the start of the second half, Wakehurst were forced to make a substitution with David Paul replacing the injured Richard Mellon and he joined brothers Rodney and Jason in the Wakehurst team.

On 68 minutes Wakehurst got the goal they richly deserved when Ryan Gregg sent a superb pass from the half way line to Jason Paul who was on the edge of the penalty area and Paul tested the keeper with a great effort.

Maddison in the Portstewart goal initially made a great save but he couldn't hold it and Rodney Paul was on hand to fire home the rebound for what turned out to be the only goal.
