Glentathlon event will benefit homeless organisation

COUNTY Antrim brothers Paul and Peter McToal, organisers of the Glentathlon challenge, are laying down the gauntlet to athletes and those with a sense of adventure to take part in this year’s event.

The Glentathlon first began in 2006 as a three day event as part of the Glenravel Festival and evolved over the following years before being re-launched in 2011 as an intense one day adventure challenge, making it more accessible to people from across Northern Ireland and further afield.

The Glentathlon involves a combination of cycling and running with two levels of challenge course to choose from, the Max (64km) and the Warrior (35km).

The Max challenge is tough by any standards with the hills, trails and mountains making it a real test of endurance. For those who aren’t quite as fit though or want to get a feel for what they can endure the Warrior challenge is a great start, taking in the region of just 2hours to complete.

Last year more than 90 people took part and with the course remaining the same for this year, the 2012 challenge is an opportunity for past participants to improve on their performance as well as attracting healthy competition from budding challengers.

Older brother Paul (45) says that although the event has evolved over the last 7 years the reason for doing it very much remains the same.

“The Glentathlon might look somewhat different now than it did in the beginning but the fact remains that the event was started because we care about the community of Glenravel.

“It is about bringing the community together, getting people involved and of course attracting tourism to the area.”

Proceeds from the event are this year supporting Habitat for Humanity Northern Ireland. Chief Executive, Jenny Williams:

“It is a privilege to be the chosen charity of this year’s Glentathlon challenge, the funds raised will have a huge impact.

“Too many people live without a roof over their head so we are very excited that as people tackle the hills and trails they will be helping us tackle poverty housing through building hope and homes around the world.”
