Coleman overcomes biting wind to triumph at Galgorm

Play continued in the Eclectic and Sweep over the Front 9 at Galgorm Castle and golfers had to contend with a bitterly cold wind.

Paul Hughes (5) led John McCarry (3) and Patrick Coleman (4) by one and two shots respectively through the Niuc in Division 1.

With two holes to play McCarry and Coleman had joined Hughes and an exciting finish was anticipated.

Coleman birdied the eighth to take a one point advantage over McCarry who parred the hole.

Hughes was another point behind after recording a bogey.

All three players bogeyed the last to leave Coleman taking first place by one shot from McCarry in second.

Through four in Division 2 Jonathan Keys (8) took an early two point lead over a quartet of players – Fergus McKelvey (6), Thomas McNeill (5), Michael McAuley (6) and Ciaran Corbett (6).

McNeill had the misfortune when he ‘dinged’ the third. Keys held his two point advantage over the next three holes with McKelvey and McAuley the main challengers. Another point further behind came McNeill and Corbett.

Keys ‘dinged’ the penultimate hole but regained his composure with a birdie at the last to win by one point from McKelvey (par, bogey) in second place.

McAuley ran into bogey trouble over the closing holes and finished with two bogeys and was joined by McNeill (par, par) and Corbett (bogey, par) a point behind McKelvey.

Ian Manson (10) opened briskly in Division 3 and after four held a three point advantage over David McIroy (8) who would have been closer but for a ‘ding’ at the Niuc. Trevor Galloway (9) was another point behind.

Manson increased his lead over the next three holes to five points over Galloway with McIlroy a further point down.

Over the closing two holes Galloway (par, bogey) and McIlroy (par, par) closed the gap to within one point but Manson just managed to hold on after a ‘ding’, double bogey finish. With a better last six Galloway finished in second place.

In Division 4 approaching the fifth tee Hugh Mussen (10) found himself with a two point lead from Mervyn Lamont (11).

Andrew McFarlane (13) was a further three points behind after failing to score at the Trout Hole.

Mussen increased his lead to three points over Lamont and five points over McFarlane with two left to play.

Mussen hit bogey trouble over the final two holes but came home bogey, double bogey to win by two points from McFarlane who picked up three points on Mussen when he finished par, bogey. Lamont was another point behind after finishing bogey, double bogey.

Steven Penney (1) won the Gross.
