Colin clinches McQuillan memorial success at Raceview

The McQuillan Memorial Trophy, donated by the McQuillan family in remembrance of past Ballymena Golf Club secretary Shinny, was the competition down for decision at Raceview.

This trophy is an annual stroke competition which always attracts a large field and this year was no different.

Fifteen handicapper Colin Robinson laid claim to the trophy with a score of nett 61, having played the course in eight over par gross.

His front nine was played with three pars, four bogeys and birdies at the first and third holes.

The back nine was a different story but with 13 shots in hand, he used them wisely as he had five bogeys, a double bogeys, two pars and a superb birdie on the tough 15th hole.

Second nett went to Paul Creevy (22) who posed a nett 63 after having been 10 over for the first nine holes and he finished his round with a valuable birdie at the final hole.

Third nett winner was Gareth McCullough (12) who produced a nett 64 on a better second nine hole total from John McFadden (28), with the high handicapper struggling on the homeward nine after an opening nine holes which included four pars.

Fifth nett prize was won by Jim Drennan (12) with a score of nett 65, having been five over on the way out.

WAH Montgomery (12) won the final nett prize with a score of 66 and his round could have been even better had he not dropped three shots over the last two holes.

Gary Black once again illustrated his consistency as he again claimed the best gross prize, having played the 18 holes in two over par, 70 shots.

ACE FIXINGS OPEN

The Wednesday open stableford was generously sponsored by Ace Fixings and it was once again a 43-point total which proved the winning score.

It came from 13-handicapper Paul Rodgers who relished his 8am tee-off as he opened his round with a level par opening nine holes of seven pars, a dropped shot on the fifth and a birdie on the second, as he accumulated 24 points, to which he added a further 19 from three pars and six bogeys.

Brian Dempster (18) was second with a total of 39 points. His opening nine holes yielded only 16 points but he found his form with an impressive 23 points on the second nine.

Nigel Getty (5) won the best gross prize with a round of two over par 70 shots. A round of 10 pars, five bogeys plus birdies on the seventh, ninth and 13th made up a fine round for Nigel.

JIMMY CARROLL

Having qualified at the start of May, Ballymena’s Jimmy Carroll All-Ireland Seniors team had a home game against Cairndhu Golf Club to determine who would reach the next round.

F Dawson and F O’Boyle scored 41 points; S Surgenor/I Lecky scored 43; B Greer/L Kerr scored 41 points and B Greer/L Kerr scored 41.
