SPONSORS’ DAY

On Sunday, September 8 there was an open Stableford which was mainly attributed to those who sponsored competitions during the past season.

The best nett prize was won by Glen Millar who playing of a handicap of sixteen returned a total of thirty nine points.

He ended up with a similar total of Michael Smyth but Glens second nine total of twenty one points was three points better than Michael’s.

Millar commenced his round with five bogeys plus a ‘ding’ on the third round and then pared the last three holes for eighteen point out.

The second nine did not start well with a bogey plus a double bogey but he then scored five pars plus a bogey on the fifteenth and seventeenth for twenty one points home.

Michael Smyth’s (4) first nine was made up of four pars, bogeys on the third and eighth and birdies on fourth, fifth and sixth to be one under gross and twenty one points.

The back nine did not match the front nine where he scored seven pars with a dropped shot on the thirteenth and seventeenth for eighteen points and an overall total of thirty nine.

The best gross card came from Michael McGarry (4) who scored seven pars plus a bogey on the 2nd and 5th on the outward nine holes and the inward nine saw him score six pars plus a birdies on the 14th only to drop a shot on each of the last two holes which gave him a gross score of seventy one three over.

FRED DALY UPDATE

The Junior Fred Daly team have entered the semi final of the plate competition where they will meet Bangor with both the semi final and final being played at Antrim Golf Club on September 22, with a tee-off time of 8.30am.

Their quarter final game with Cushendall ended with a win for Ballymena by the slim margin of one game 7 1/2 to 6 1/2.

The second leg played on the eighth at Ballymena resulted in a win by one point that after having left Cushendall with an all square result of three and a half each which was a superb result.

The game at Raceview saw Jonny Law win one up and what a result considering Law was four down after eleven holes, another close game resulted in another one up victory for Jake Carson.

Shane McWilliams having gone out third did not let the team down and a 2/1 win on the seventeenth kept the momentum going but the pressure then transferred to the last man out namely Tom Ballentine and he responded in the best possible way.

Standing on the eighteenth tee one up he finished in a blaze of glory, scoring a birdie to win two up and take the team through to that semi final game with Bangor on the 22nd.
