Eugene overcomes frosty conditions to win at Raceview

Underfoot conditions were rather crisp, the result of a heavy overnight frost, but it didn’t deter the competitors and the scoring was exceptional given the conditions.

The top return from the 13 holes came from Eugene O’Dornan who, off a handicap allowance of 16 shots, produced 34 stableford points.

Eugene scored 22 points on the first nine holes which included a non-scoring triple bogey on the par four fifth. The final four holes saw him go bogey, bogey, par birdie which yielded a further 12 points.

Second nett was Clifford Andrews (19) with 32 points and on a better last four holes from Ken Herbison who, although missing out on the overall prize, had the consolation of winning his category.

Andrews used his handicap allowance to good effect, turning four double bogeys into nett pars for two points each. His bonus scores came at the fifth and ninth which were worth four points each.

Category one saw Gerard rafferty (5) notch up 28 points from his round of three over gross and his card showed only one hole where he scored just one point.

Noel Kidd (9) won category two with a total of 24 points. After a rather mixed opening four holes, which included two double bogeys and a birdie, he settled to use his 18 shot allowance to add another 18 points.

Category three was won by Gordon Caldwell (12) with a total of 29 points from five pars, seven bogeys plus a double bogey on the par three second.

Ken Herbison (14) had the top score in category four with 32 points, of which 20 came from the first nine holes. His round included a birdie at the eighth which added four points to the total.

Gary Black (1) continues to reign in the best gross category and he produced a superb score of two under in the conditions. Having dropped a shot on the opening hole, he then birdied the next two holes and went on to add seven pars, birdies on the sixth and 13th plus a bogey on the 10th.
