EuroPro Tour event another major success at Galgorm

GALGORM Castle Golf Club cemented its growing reputation as a tournament venue after another hugely successful week.

After the success of its debut in hosting the Northern Ireland EuroPro Open last year, the pressure was on the local club to maintain its high standards - and how it delivered!

It was aided by thrilling action on the greens and fairways which saw Englishman Chris Hanson edge out compatriot Graeme Clark in a play-off after both men finished on 14 under.

Three behind overnight, Hanson shot a superb seven-under final round 65 to post the clubhouse lead but Clark birdied the last to force the play-off as he signed for a 66.

Overnight leader Ross Cameron fell away with a 75 while Cork’s Steven Hackett moved up to third with a 67 while Derryman Michael McGeady shared fourth.

Earlier in the week, Cameron had carded a stunning opening round of nine underpar as the tip-top condition of the parkland course was matched by the quality of play from the competitors.

One feature which was evident was the comments from the players who raved about the huge turnout of spectators - more than has been seen at any other EuroPro Tour event this season - and it gave the golfers a good grounding for the sort of attention they will face if they are successful in reaching the Challenge Tour and beyond.

Away from the course, 2010 US Open champion Graeme McDowell proved a huge attraction during his appearance at the tented village, during which he signed countless autographs for delighted fans.

And the annual George Best Foundation Pro Am event also proved a major success, with the prizes being distributed in a function at Galgorm Manor on the eve of the main competition.
