Felix leads the field as summer of hot scoring continues at Raceview

Having been one of the early-morning starters, The nine-handicapper set the target for the day and the nearest anyone got to him was David Elliott, who finished ne shot in arrears.

Felix commenced his round with four pars, dropped a shot on the fifth and followed that with three more pars only to shed a shot on the par five ninth to be two over gross.

Into the second nine, McQuillan dropped his third shot on the 10th but then finished in a blaze with eight straight pars for a round of 71 shots, less his handicap.

Second placed David Elliott, a new member of the club this year, returned a score of nett 63 from his 17-handicap, having played the front nine in four over, which came from five pars, a bogey on the fifth with a double bogey on either side, while the ninth produced a birdie.

The back nine was not of an equal standard where he scored tow pars, six bogeys plus a double bogey on the 11th.

Third nett prize was won by Stephen Surgenor Jnr who, playing off a shot allowance of 14, posted a nett score of 64 which ended up one better than his dad, Stephen Snr.

A first nine of five pars and four bogeys was added to on the second nine with three pars plus six bogeys for equal nines of 39 shots.

Stephen Snr, also with a 14 handicap, produced three pars, four bogeys, a double bogey on the seventh plus a birdie on the sixth to be out in five over.

The second nine looked hopeful as he birdied the 10th, only to triple bogey the 11th and he added three pars plus four bogeys to be six over and that left Stephen with a nett three under 65 and on a better second nine nett from Michael Smyth (4).

Smyth is usually a contender for the best gross award but on this occasion he got himself onto the nett prize list with a 65, having played the course in one over par.

Michael’s outward nine commenced with a dropped shot but he followed that with five pars plus birdies at the third, sixth and ninth to be out in two under.

The 10th was parred, followed by a dropped shot and the other seven holes were all fours, two of which were bogeys.

Sixth nett prize was won by Brian McDermott (25) who also posted a nett 65 only to lose out on the second nine, which could be largely attributed to a drop of five shots on the 11th.

His first nine contained three pars, four bogeys and double bogeys at the first two holes and the second nine contained five bogeys, two double bogeys and a finishing par plus that dreaded 11th.

The best gross card came from Jonathan Law (3) who played the 18 holes in one over gross, 69 shots.

Law parred the first three holes, then birdied the fourth and followed that with five more pars.

Into the second nine, he shed a shot on the 10th and 13th plus the 16th and the other six holes were five pars and a birdie at the last.

SUNDAY OPEN

The Sunday open stableford resulted in three scores of 38 points being returned.

The winner was William Andrews (23) with a better second nine total of 22 points, that despite a non-score on the final hole.

His front nine of 16 points had also contained a non-score, this time on the par four fifth.

Nigel Thompson (3) took second nett prize on the basis of a second nine total of 31 points, three ahead of the third nett prizewinner.

Nigel dropped seven shots on the first nine for 17 points but the second nine was much better, where he scored five pars plus four bogeys for 21 points.

The third prize was won by Paul Stevenson, who scored 20 points from his outward nine where he scored four pars, three bogeys, plus birdies at the seventh and ninth.

The second nine was made up of six pars and three bogeys for 18 points.

Michael Smyth got back to his accustomed position of best gross winner with a round of 71 strokes.

Michael scored birdies on the first, third and fourth with a dropped shot on the second and went on to score three pars plus two bogeys for a level par first nine. The second nine contained six pars plus three bogeys,

LADIES

It’s been quite a week for both Jacqui Brown and Jill Black at Ballymena Golf Club.

The pair combined to win the Aneen Beggs Greensomes Stroke competition and then they filled to top two positions in the Morton Cup.

Together Jacqui and Jill scored 68 and a half points to win the Greensomes event before the former won the Morton Cup against par with ease - finishing six up against the course.

Jill, her nearest rival, finished one up.
