Final hole eagle helps Craig to Clarion Audio event success at Raceview

The winner of the event was Craig McCartney who, playing off a six handicap, produced a total of 41 stableford points.

Craig made his intentions known with a birdie on the opening hole and he concluded his round with an eagle two at the last - these two holes accounting for seven points alone.

He also had four birdies in a one over par round and his second nine total of 20 points saw him claim victory ahead of second-placed George Montgomery (17).

He scored 22 points on the way out but could only manage 19 on the way back from a consistent second nine of eight single bogeys and a par.

John E Quigley (20) scored 40 points to finish third but he will be annoyed that he dropped two shots on each of the last two holes. On the plus side, his back nine total of 21 points was the best of two other 40-point totals.

Fourth nett was Kenny Morrison (20) who had equal nines of 20 points and a better last six hole total from Gary Rodgers (14) who also scored 20 points on each nine holes.

Sixth place went to Christopher Adams who scored 39 points from his 21 handicap - a score which would have been greater but for ‘dings’ at the third and fourth holes.

The best gross prize was won by five-handicapper Paul Darragh who played the course in four over par, 72 shots.

WEDNESDAY OPEN

The Wednesday open stableford was sponsored by Hillview Chemicals and was won by Crawford Logan (16) with a total of 41 points, of which 24 came on the opening nine holes.

Second nett was Chris McCrory (12) with a total of 40 points from equal nines of 20 points.

Douglas Coulter (13) took the third nett prize, also with 40 points, but with an inferior second nine of 19 points.

John Robinson (3) produced the best gross card with a one over par score of 69 shots, which included a birdie at the final hole.

SUNDAY OPEN

The Sunday open was won by Jake Carson (6) with a total of 41 points, 21 of which came on the first nine holes, which he played in level par.

Second nett went to Phillip Martin (8) who returned a score of 40 points, with a birdie on the final hole helping him to a second nine total of 21 points.

David Smith (6) won the best gross prize with a round of five over par. Having been two over on the first nine, he then played the second nine holes in three over.

LADIES

The ladies at Ballymena Golf Club played for the prestigious Captain’s Prize last week and it was Denise Harper who stole the show.

She completed her 18 holes at the Raceview Road course with a magnificent haul of 42 points to finish well ahead of her closest rivals.

Jill Black won the Gross prize with 22 points, while the sectional winners were: A - Eileen Hudson 32; B - Sandra Lennox 34; C - Madeline McIlroy 36.
