More Irish success for golf ace Dermot

BALLYMENA golf ace added yet another accolade his glittering golfing CV last week.

Dermot shot a closing 73 to win the PGA Southern Branch sponsored Irish Boys Amateur Close Championship at Dungarvan Golf Club.

The Irish Boys International, who reached the last eight in the British Boys Championship last week, held a four stroke at the halfway stage.

A 75 in testing conditions on the final morning was good enough for McElroy to maintain the lead entering the final round but the gap was narrowed to three as Tullamore's Stuart Grehan shot a third round 74.

Grehan covered the opening nine holes of the final round in two over par while McElroy went one better to restore his four stroke advantage.

McElroy forged further clear over the closing nine as Grehan dropped more shots and eventually relinquished the runners-up spot to Conor Glynn (Carton House) who was also awarded the trophy as leading U17 player.

It completes a hat-trick of Irish titles for Dermot after capturing the Irish U15 title in 2008 and the Irish U16 trophy in 2009.
