Stewart dominates proceedings in Currie Cup competition at Raceview

Gary Stewart added his name to lengthy list of winners of the Currie Cup - one of Ballymena Golf Club’s oldest competitions - recently.

The nine-handicapper had three points to spare as he posted a total of 42 stableford points.

A front nine of six pars and three bogeys gave him 19 points, but a level par back nine added another 23 points to that total.

Runner-up was five-handicapper Christopher Magee who had 39 points, 20 of them on the back nine after a round of two over par gross.

Category one was won by Sean McGarry (5) who had equal nines of 36 shots for a total of 37 points.

Darren McGaughey (12) won category two with 38 points, 21 of them on the second nine and his played the final six holes in level par.

Category three was won by Gary Rodgers (14), also with 38 points, but he was unable to maintain the form of his first nine, where he amassed 22 points.

Keith Barrow topped the scoring in category four with 39 points, with the 21-handicapper scoring 21 points on the front nine.

The best gross card was returned by Gary Black (2) who was one over par gross for his round.

THOMPSON CUP

Played in conjunction with the Currie Cup was the Thompson Cup, for members aged 55 and older, and this was won by Wilfred Leetch who, off 22, scored 42 points.

That was one point better than Tommy McKendry (25) who will rue non-scores at the third and 14th. However, he still had a better second nine total to edge out David Mulholland (8).

The Sunday open stableford was won by Seamus O’Boyle (18) with a total of 41 points, 22 of which came from the second nine.

Second place went to Albert Smyth (12) a visitor from Galgorm, who scored 39 points.

The best gross prize also went to a Galgorm member, three-handicapper Stephen McAuley, who played the course in three over gross, which included an eagle two on the par four 13th.

MONDAY OPEN

The open competition on the Monday was won by Jake Carson (10) with a total of 42 points. Runner-up was Richard Mark (8) with 41 points from a round of three over gross. Paddy Kearney (6) returned the best gross, with a four over par round.

‘HAT’ COMPETITION

The next two months will feature ‘hat’ competitions, which will be played on Wednesday nights.

The first of these was won by Jake Carson (10) with 42 points, with Galgorm’s Brendan Killough second three points adrift. Third nett was Eugene M Reid

LADIES

Sandra Lennox and Arlene McCartney got together to win the Nellie Garrett Foursomes Stableford event with a total of 39 points, while Vera Crummey’s 67 was good enough to win her the President’s Prize. Eileen Hudson and Jennifer Eagleson, who took the honours in Section A and B, respectively. Eileen Millar won Section C with a 75.
