Stirling Jnr claims Medal success at Galgorm

There was a good turn out of golfers for the Harry Dunlop sponsored Medal competition at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

After the front nine seven handicapper Stuart Riddell was two shots ahead of David Stirling jnr (4) who in turn was one shot ahead of David Stirling (10). Another shot behind came David Halliday (9), David Wylie (10) and Billy Cull (7). Trevor Fleming (9) and Neville Neill (8) were a further one and two shots respectively away.

Riddell dropped back over the next four holes and was three shots behind the new leader Stirling jnr. who was having a ‘ding-dong battle with his father who was two shots behind.

Approaching the Lowlands Stirling jnr had opened up a four shot advantage over Stirling, Riddell and Halliday.

Stirling jnr. who had been playing par golf after a birdie at the Fort finished with two bogeys but managed to hold on to win Overall by one shot from Stirling (par, par), Halliday (par, par) and Riddell (par, par). Halliday with a better back nine finished Overall Runner-up.

Stirling (better back nine)won Division 1 with Riddell taking second place. Wylie (par, double bogey), Neill (bogey, par), Fleming (par, par) and Cull (par, par) all finished together and with a better back nine third place went to Neill.

In Division 2 at the turn Simon Finlay (14) was one shot ahead of Thomas McNeill (11) and Alan McClements (11). Leonard Craig (13) was another two shots behind.

Through the Maple Finlay was joined at the front by McNeill with McClements and Craig another two and four shots respectively further behind. Approaching the Lowlands McNeill was leading by one shot from Finlay after parring the Grove to a bogey from Finlay.

Finlay came home bogey, par and joined McNeill (bogey, bogey) and with a better back nine McNeill finished in first place with Finlay in second. Three shots further back McClements (bogey, bogey) and Craig (par, bogey) finished together and third place went to Craig with a better back nine.

After the outward half in Division 3 Christopher McBurney (19) and Andrew McLarnon (16) were leading Geoffrey Marshall (16) by one shot. Trevor Dawson (16) was another shot behind and two shots in front of Drew Stewart (19).

Approaching the fourteenth tee Dawson had edged into a one shot advantage from McBurney, McLarnon and Stewart.

Dawson and McBurney were level with two holes left to play.

Dawson and McBurney were still level with one to play and a bogey by McBurney to a double bogey by Dawson saw McBurney win by one shot.

Third place, another shot behind, went to Marshall who finished with two bogeys.

The gross prize was won by Phillip Graham (scratch) with a 71, while Brian Heggarty (15) won the seniors’ prize.

SUBSIDIARY STABLEFORD

Patrick Reid (19) won the subsidiary stableford event by two points from James McKay (27) and George Irwin (28).
