Good crowd for Southside friendly with Carniny Youth

Friendship and respect was firmly established on Saturday afternoon when the two local sides Southside Rangers U18s and Carniny Youth U18s met at Wakehurst.

The first ever meeting of the two teams provided an entertaining game enjoyed by the good crowd in attendance. Southside, who this season will once again compete in the SBYL, while Carniny Youth will for the first time enter the IFA Youth League, both played out a quality game. Both sides had opportunities in the first half but it was Southside who made the most of their chances and goals from Richard Wilson and Matthew Henry gave them a 2-0 lead at the break.

Both teams made the customary preseason changes at half time using this game as a fitness exercise for the full squads. Southside increased the lead to 3-0 on 65 minutes when new boy Daniel Hogg stabbed home from close range but Carniny responded only a minute later making it 3-1. The lead was narrowed further with five minutes remaining when the lively Carniny number 9 raced in behind the Southside backline to make it 3-2. In the final minute Carniny were awarded a penalty and from the spot kick again the number 9 found the back of the net to leave the final score 3-3.

This game which will now become an annual event between the two clubs and was a useful exercise for all involved as the preseason preparations continue. The players and officials of both teams showed exactly how an exercise like this can cement relationships and build respect between the clubs.
