Graham ‘powers’ to victory at Galgorm

The Panasonic Power Tools sponsored Stableford was played at Galgorm Castle with the course in good condition after the recent spell of wet weather; a stiff breeze was making play difficult for the golfers.

At halfway Robert Graham (19) was being closely followed by Philip Galloway (14), Paul Sittlington (11) and Stephen Black (14) a point behind with Denis McCarroll (17) and Leonard Craig (12) a further three points behind.

Through 14, Graham was joined by Sittlington with Galloway still a point behind. Another three points away McCarroll, Black and Craig were trying hard to catch up.

With two to play Graham and Sittlington were still out in front a point ahead of Galloway who was joined by McCarroll and Black who were making late efforts after scoring two pars each. Craig after two bogeys was a further two points behind.

Graham with a double bogey, par finish edged ahead to win by one point from Galloway (bogey, par) and McCarroll (two bogeys) and with a better back nine McCarroll took the runner-up place.

Galloway won Division 2 with Sittlington (double bogey, bogey) second. Black ruined any chance he had of winning when ‘dinged’ 17 and this allowed Craig to catch up after a bogey, par finish. Black finished with a par to take third place with Craig taking the Seniors Prize.

In Division 1 at the turn Patrick Bamber (5) held a one point advantage over Gary McWilliams (9) followed by Trevor Fleming (8) and Adrian McCart (10) at two point intervals respectively further behind.

McWilliams took over the lead through 11 after a ‘ding’ from Bamber and was never headed after that. McWilliams had a one point advantage over Fleming after the Maple with McCart and Bamber another two points down.

Three holes further on and McWilliams had increased his lead to two points over Fleming followed by McCart and Bamber another two points behind.

McWilliams finished (double bogey, par to take first place one point ahead of Fleming (bogey, par).

Another two points behind, McCart (bogey, par) and Bamber (bogey, par) finished level and with a better back nine McCart took third place.

There was a fourway tie at halfway in Division 3 between Andrew Moore (17), Gerry Lynn (17), Robert Topping (18) and James Logan (18). Jackson Minford (16) was another two points behind.

Approaching Beechers Lynn was leading by one point from Moore and Logan (‘dinged’ 11 and 14) with Minford and Topping (‘ding’ on 13) another point behind.

Into the Lowlands and Lynn had moved into a two point advantage from Logan. Moore and Minford were another point away with Topping a further two points behind. Lynn was leading by one point with one to play but a ‘ding’ up 18 enabled Moore (double bogey, par) to draw level and with a better back six Moore finished first with Lynn second.

A point behind Logan (two double bogeys), Topping (bogey, par) and Minford (double bogey, bogey) finished together and with a better back nine Minford claimed third place.

James Rea (28) and Trevor Galloway (28) were three points ahead of Seamus Laverty (20) after the front nine in Division 4. Cecil McAleese (25) was a further four points down.

Through 13, Rea was leading by two points from Laverty with Galloway after a ‘ding’ at 11 slipping to three points behind the leader. McAleese had improved with a par at the Maple and was another two points down.

Galloway improved over the next three holes with a run of bogey, par, par to lead by one point from Rea with two to play. Laverty and McAleese were one and two points respectively further behind.

Galloway’s chance disappeared when he ‘dinged’ seventeen and double bogeyed the last. Rea ((double bogey, bogey) and Laverty (bogey, par)

finished together and with a better back nine Laverty took first place with Rea in second. A point behind McAleese (double bogey, par) finished in third a point ahead of Galloway.

Michael Reid won th gross prize with 37 points.
