Hamill turns up the heat at Raceview

THE Jimmy Stock Heating Oils-sponsored competition at Ballymena Golf Club saw William Hamill lead the field on a day when stableford points were aplenty.

The 23-handicapper ended up with a total of 42 points which was two better than the next five nett scores, with Hamill's second nine being the deciding factor.

Hamill opened his round with a par and although he had no score on the ninth, he still managed to score 20 points on the first nine holes.

The second nine also opened with a par but he also parred the last hole and although he had two double bogeys, he still added 22 points to that first nine score.

Second place was taken by Ryan Bell (11) who had the best of the 40-point returns, thanks to a better last six hole score.

Playing the front nine to his handicap, Bell got things together on the back nine where, despite dropping a shot on the 10th and 12th, he then birdied the 13th and 14th.

The final four holes resulted in two pars plus two bogeys for an additional 22 points, which pushed Aaron Lemon into third place by virtue of a better last six hole score.

The 10-handicapper was five over after nine holes, giving him 18 points, but the second nine holes was a totally different game as he covered them in one over par for 22 points.

Roy Law claimed the fourth nett prize but he required the countback system to pip Derek McCully as they both had 19 on the second nine but Roy had the better last six hole score.

Law played a very steady opening nine holes where he had six single bogeys plus a trio of pars for 21 points. The second nine was quite a mixture with five bogeys, one par, a birdie, a double bogey and a non-event at the 12th.

McCully's (28) best nine was the front nine where he produced 21 points, which included five double bogeys. The back nine also contained three double bogeys but he also had a non-score at the 17th which was somewhat costly but he still managed to push Ivan McMaster (16) into sixth place.

Ivan was on song on the opening nine where he registered 22 points from five pars and four bogeys.

Although the second nine was certainly steady, he managed to score only one par - on the 10th - with the other eight holes accounting for a dropped shot on each and a second nine total of 18 points.

Steven Smyth notched up yet another best gross prize, having scored a level par total of 68 shots.

The outward nine saw six pars accompanied by birdies on the second, seventh and eighth for a three under score of 32 shots. The inward nine started well with a par followed by a birdie but alas the final five holes saw Steven register four bogeys plus a par on the 15th which really spoiled what looked to be a much better round in the making.
