Hockey Club continues to promote cross-community links

FOR the second year running, Ballymena Hockey Club has been involved in linking some of their U15 members with peers from a local camogie club.

The 5 week programme ended on Saturday with an exhibition match at the hockey club’s annual mini and junior tournament, followed by a team building afternoon at Ardclinis Outdoor Adventure Centre near Carnlough.

This cross-community initiative is funded by North East PEACE 111 Sport for Peace Building Project. It is a two year project which is delivered in the six council areas of Northern Ireland with the aim of;

‘Promoting the sharing, expression and experiencing of different cultures, including the indigenous and ethnic minority communities, across the North East area by participating in different types of sports and leisure activities.’

The Cultural Awareness Project in Ballymena involved Ballymena Hockey Club and Geraldine’s Camogie Club from Portglenone. During the project, young players had the opportunity to take part in each other’s sport through cross skills training hosted at both clubs and with the success of last year’s programme, the club was only too willing to encourage some of its members to take part again this year.

Club organiser, Mary Glass thinks such a project is very important and worthwhile to have. “The programme has proved to be a great success and the hope is that this group will continue to meet on regular basis to reinforce the positive relations formed though this initative.”

The Hockey Club would like to thank Kyle Ferguson from Peace 3 for his role in organising the Project in Ballymena and also to Chrissie Doherty (Geraldine’s), Mary Glass and Becky Linford (Ballymena Hockey Club).
