Lady bowlers’ Zone dream ends at first hurdle

MID-Antrim ladies’ hopes of Inter-Zone Championship glory ended at the opening hurdle on Saturday.

A depleted Mid-Antrim outfit went down by seven shots, 46-53, at home to Mid-Ulster at Killymurris.

In the first series of games Betty McKnight, Molly Turtle, Madeline Graham and Ann Bacon were in opposition to K McKenna’s charges and it was the visitors who opened the scoring with two shots but Mid Antrim to their credit came back strongly and by the half way mark led by 6–3.

They then managed to restrict their opponents to scoring single shots and finished as victors by 9-6.

Yvonne Rock, Ashleigh Rainey, Jennifer Wilson and Helen Maybin were in opposition to the rink skipped by D Young.

They started strongly in the opening ends but two good counts by the opposition left the sides tied at the half way stage at 5–5.However the opposition finished strongly to snatch a 7–10 win.

Joyce Lithco, Eva Ferguson, Megan Wilson and Anne Agnew were in opposition to the visiting rink skipped by Margaret McIvor.

In a very close game each rink won five ends but the visitors had the better scoring and managed to take a narrow 8–9 win.

After the interval Irene McCullough, Yvonne Hall, Joyce Green and Roberta Morrison were in opposition to Bridget Davidson’s charges.

The visitors began in good form and by the half way mark led by 1–8. They continued to dominate the closing ends and ran out worthy winners by 4-11

Jean Mullan, Kathleen McKelvey, Samantha Lynn and Helen Lynn were always behind to the opposition rink skipped by E Wright.

They stuck to the task an to their credit they finished strongly to limit the damage to 7–10

The final game with a reshaped foursome of Wilma Adair, Margaret Johnston, Marty Kirkpatrick and Shelia Smith opposed the visiting rink skipped by Shelia Anderson.

The visitors opened the scoring but the home four buoyed by a count of six shots on the third end continued to dominate for a few ends.

However the visitors finished the stronger and managed to limit the deficit to 11–7.

Mid-Antrim’s next game will be in the subsidiary competition, an away tie against the loser of the South and East Belfast versus Armagh game.
