Locals among winners at Cycling Ulster prize night

The Cycling Ulster awards evening will take place on Saturday 10th January in the White River Hotel in Toome. Special guest for the evening will be the President of Cycling Ireland Denis Toomey. Amongst the other invited guests is Ballymena Road Club President Alan Mark.

The evening is always very enjoyable and well attended. Ulster Championship medals will be presented and Ballymena RC riders are amongst the winners.

Eileen Burns had a clean sweep of Ulster Ladies time trial championship wins having taken the titles at 10, 25, 50 and 100 miles.

Laura Blair won a bronze medal in the 25 miles championship. Steven Workman won bronze medals in both the 50 miles and 100 miles time trial championships.”

The Ballymena ladies team of Laura Blair, Eileen Burns, Claire Gillespie and Emma Smyth also won the Ulster 25 miles team time trial championship event.

Another Ballymena cyclist Darrell Erwin won the Ulster hand cycling title races at 10 and 25 miles.

Many Ballymena Road Club – Chain Reaction Cycles – members have already renewed their Cycling Ireland and club memberships for the 2015 season. This is because their Cycling Ireland membership expires on 31st December and it is vital that anyone taking part in the club’s weekend touring and training rides has the appropriate insurance cover.

There are a number of different types of Cycling Ireland memberships to pick from, including.

A non-competition licence (also know as a leisure licence) covers you while you are out training, on club spins, and while participating in leisure tours. The fee, which includes Ballymena Road Club’s membership, is £48. Insurance cover and benefits for a non-competition licence are the same as any other licence but it does not cover you to race in competitive events.

A limited competition licence allows you to compete in all domestic competition except open road races. It replaces the “Restricted” licence and also covers club competition. You may use a limited competition licence to compete in Track, BMX, Off-Road, Time-Trials, Hill-Climbs, Club Racing, Bicycle-polo and Artistic Cycling. This licence is not specific to one discipline, it covers them all. However it does not include open road racing. This licence costs £73.

Full competition licence. This licence costs £126 and qualifies you for racing in any discipline in Ireland. If you want to race overseas you can get overseas authorisation for an extra £17.
