Marcus has the Keys to success at Galgorm

There was plenty of sunshine and a slight breeze as the golfers set out in the J. & R. Keys sponsored June Medal at Galgorm Castle Golf Club.

At halfway Norman Reid (9) held a comfortable three shot advantage from Gareth Marcus (17), Ricki Simpson (10) and John O’Kane (10). Another shot further behind came Phil Hanlon (8) and Chris Djorjani (10). Colin Anderson (9) was a further shot down with John Rainey (9) another three shots away. Reid,s lead was cut to two shots by O.Kane through the Maple. Marcus and Simpson were a shot behind O’Kane followed by Anderson, Hanlon and Djorjani a further shot away. Rainey was still in contention another shot down. Up the Grove and with two to play Reid who ran into bogey trouble at Beechers and the Grove was overtaken by Marcus to lead by one shot. Marcus held onto his one shot advantage as he finished double bogey, par to win Overall. Simpson and Rainey both parred the last two holes and finished together and with a better back nine Rainey was the Overall Runner-Up. Simpson won Division 1 by one shot from Reid (two bogeys), Anderson (two pars), Hanlon (two pars), Djorjani (bogey, birdie) and O’Kane (two pars) who all finished together. Second place went to Anderson (better back nine) with Hanlon taking third place with a better back six.

On the turn for home in Division 2 Seamus Laverty (16) was a shot ahead of Andy Moore (14). James McAuley (14) and Gary Hood (14) were another shot behind followed by Tony Carroll (11) a further shot away. After the Maple Laverty was leading by two shots from Hood and Carroll followed by McAuley and Moore at one and two shots respectively further behind. Approaching the Grove Carroll with a par at Beechers had reduced Laverty’s lead to one shot with Hood, McAuley and Moore another shot behind. Over the final three holes Laverty with a par and two bogeys held on to win by one shot from Carroll (par, bogey, par). Another shot behind came Hood (par, bogey, par), Moore (par, bogey, par) and McAuley (bogey, par, par) and with a better back six third place went to McAuley.

John Fitzgerald (20) was leading Division 3 after the front nine by three shots from John Caulfield (19). Nicholas Read (17) was another two shots behind followed by Joe Barr (17) a further shot down. Through fourteen Fitzgerald’s lead had been reduced to one shot by Caulfield with Read a further shot behind. Fitzgerald was joined by Caulfield up the Grove to lead by three and six shots respectively from Read and Barr. Fitzgerald with a double bogey, par finish won by one shot from Caulfield (double bogey, bogey) with Read (two bogeys) in third place one shot ahead of Barr who finished strongly with two pars.

Steven Penney (1) won the Gross and George Small (10) won the Seniors. The subsidiary stableford was won by Andrew McKibben.
