Michelin make strong start to league title defence

Michelin flashed out a warning that they are in no mood to relinquish their Ballymena & District League crown as they began their title defence last week.

The Woodside Road outfit overwhelmed JTI in their opening fixture, taking all five points from a 66 shots to 19 win.

Pride of place for Michelin was the performance of Megan Wilson, Sammy Hamill, Jonathan Reid and Wesley Caldwell, who eclipsed George Beattie’s rink by 27 shots to nil.

There were also wins from the rinks led by Grant Robinson, Matthew Boyd and Graham Wilson as Michelin opened their campaign in confident fashion.

Broughshane Playing Fields Association ‘A’, in the eyes of many observers, Michelin’s most likely challengers, dropped two points fro their opening game as they travelled to Old Bleach.

Both teams claimed a point apiece in each half with Alan Cahoon and William Morrison ‘pointing’ for Broughshane - who earned a third point by winning by six shots overall - and Willie Fullerton and Mervyn McDonald claiming the Randalstown side’s points.

Newly-promoted BIBC celebrated their first game back in the top division with a win over Golf Club.

It looked as though it might be a chastening return to the top tier as Sean McGarry and David McCullough led the golfers to first half victories.

But ‘BI’ battled back to claim both second half points and the overall shots total with wins from Nigel Robinson and David Duncan in a strong second half performance.
